Inness Summer Day Camp is seeking outgoing, organized and motivated counselors
who love working with kids outdoors! Counselors will play an essential role in
connecting younger campers to their natural environment through stories, crafts, and
exploration. Counselors are responsible for developing and implementing fun and
engaging nature-based activities and for the health and safety of our campers. Our
program will give counselors the opportunity to give something of themselves in a way
that’s both selfless and fulfilling. They will get the opportunity to work on interpersonal
skills, building a solid and caring relationship with younger campers. Our counselors will
gain experience on how to be patient, respect boundaries and communicate kindly with
others who may be reluctant to trust them. These skills will carry over into their personal
lives!

Responsibilities

Counselors are requested to attend the pre-camp staff training (dates TBD) prior to the
start of camp if school schedule permits. Counselors will take part in training with the
camp director to implement cohesive and exciting outdoor nature-based summer
activities for children ages 5-15. Training will consist of planning, playing games, and
safety training. Counselors assist in the administration of the program and in the
execution of camp logistics such as attendance at drop-off, pick-up and equipment set
up and take down. In addition, counselors work with the camp director and lead
counselors to organize and conduct classes, prepare lesson plans and lead classes.

Under the supervision of the camp director & lead counselors they will:

■ Make the camp a fun place to be, helping to devise and plan games and
activities
■ Help provide and maintain a safe and functional outdoor learning environment
■ Help campers resolve conflicts, mentors will always work with a lead counselor
and/or the camp director
■ Counselors will work with the camp director to learn the basics of child
development, programming, and supervision procedures and policies, etc.
■ Counselors will work with staff to develop and co-lead workshops or games
■ Counselors will participate in informal and formal activities with campers

Skills & Qualifications

REQUIRED Qualifications

■ All applicants must be 15 years or older
■ All applicants should be interested in working with children and possess maturity,
flexibility, a strong work ethic, and the ability to have fun!
■ Prior experience as a child’s caregiver, babysitter, teacher’s asst., etc., preferably
in an outdoor setting *references will be requested
■ Must love being outside and able to work in various weather conditions including
heat, humidity, rain, etc.
■ Sharing a love of nature with others
■ Highly enthusiastic, outgoing, motivated
■ Must be creative, responsible, organized and be able to work on their own and in
small teaching teams with little oversight.
■ CPR and First Aid Certification required before starting work. Inness will provide
training prior to the start of camp if needed.
■ In accordance with NY State guidelines and Inness policy, all summer staff must
provide a current and complete record of immunizations.

Preferred Skills

Knowledge and experience in any of the following areas:

■ General Naturalist Studies including flora and fauna identification for Hudson
Valley (or similar skills from another bio-region)
■ Basic Wilderness/Outdoor Skills
■ Basic gardening knowledge
■ Experience, knowledge, or coursework in child development, behavior
management, or other teaching philosophies

■ Dates
July 15th - 18th
July 22nd - 25th
August 12th - 15th
August 19th - 22nd

■ Pay rate: $17-$22 per hour *depending on experience. References will be
requested for any prior employment listed.
■ A typical camp day lasts 8-9 hours for staff with campers onsite from 9am-3pm
Monday to Thursday.
■ We prefer if applicants are available to work the full camp season, including staff
training days AND camp dates (see above), but will work with individual staff to
meet their needs.

This position requires staff to stand, walk, kneel and be outdoors for long periods
of time. Applicants must be able to carry a backpack or pull gear up to 75lbs.
